Trump said in a news conference he had written letters to the families of four soldiers killed in an October 4 ambush in Niger and planned to call them, crediting himself with taking extra steps in honoring the dead properly. "I'm going to be calling them, I want a little time to pass".

Trump said his letters to the families of those soldiers have yet to be sent but would be Monday or Tuesday and he added that he will call families "at some point".

Trump himself has tweeted 67 times about Benghazi, not once about the four soldiers killed in Niger.

"The traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents - a lot of them didn't make calls", he said. I feel badly. It's the toughest-the toughest calls that I have to make are the calls where this happens. He said it's possible that Obama "did sometimes" but "other presidents did not call".

Trump's allegation that Obama hadn't made calls was the subject of another question later in the news conference.

The progressive political action group VoteVets slammed Mr. Trump.

The Impeach-O-Meter is a wildly subjective and speculative daily estimate of the likelihood that Donald Trump leaves office before his term ends, whether by being impeached (and convicted) or by resigning under threat of same. "They've been sent or they're going out tonight, but they were during the weekend", the president said.

He then claimed that other commanders in chief hadn't reached out to families of Americans killed in action, indicating he'd been told as much by the generals who serve in his administration. "Every time Michelle and I sit at the bedside of a wounded warrior or grieve and hug members of a Gold Star Family".

Several former aides to President Obama quickly pushed back against Trump's assertion.

For his part, Trump tweeted his support for the Gateway Pundit's debunkd conspiracy theory.

Senior Advisor to Obama Dan Pfeiffer also chimed in, calling him a "pathological liar".

"I felt very, very badly about that", Trump said during a press availability in the Rose Garden.

"To say president obama (or past presidents) didn't call the family members of soldiers KIA - he's a deranged animal", she wrote on Twitter.

"The President wasn't criticizing predecessors, but stating a fact". "And he has said many times that it is one of the most hard parts of his job and a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform". "But I like the combination of-when I can-the combination of a call and also a letter".

The president then made a decision to brag about how awesome he thinks he is as compared to his predecessors.
