Download speeds will be similar to the previous SoC, as it has 600Mbps LTE support.

Qualcomm is at the absolute bleeding edge of connectivity technology, with the world's first tests of 5G connections on a mobile device now completed.

Cristiano Amon, executive vice president at Qualcomm Technologies said: "This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world".

As you can see from the image above, the reference design smartphone isn't the slimmest handset around, but that's ok, it's a reference design and built for testing the 5G signal. Therefore it will take a year or so before it shows up in a smartphone.

Qualcomm Technologies also announced new additions to the RF Front-End portfolio that are created to provide comprehensive support for devices operating in the 600 MHz spectrum.

More news: India ease past Pakistan

On October 17 past year, Qualcomm announced its intentions to make 5G commercially available in the future. Qualcomm obtained gigabit speeds across the 28GHz millimetre-wave (mmWave) frequency band. Other connectivity features include Global Positioning System, dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 (with aptX and aptX HD), USB 3.1, NFC, and much more. The Snapdragon 636 also comes with support for modern ultrawide FHD+ displays and Assertive Display, which optimizes the visibility of the display in all lighting conditions.

This new mid-market processor features the octa-core Qualcomm Kryo 260 CPU running at up to 1.8GHz, "which delivers a 40 per cent increase in device performance over the Snapdragon 630". A key aspect of these high-frequency bands is that wide swaths of spectrum are available for use - and wide swaths of spectrum will be necessary to support the high data rates expected for 5G. Qualcomm believes that 5G smartphone production on a massive level can start somewhere in the first half of 2019.

We first saw the 5G design in use in an Australian Hotspot run by local carrier Telstra alongside Netgear and Ericsson, but the X16 modem was, at that stage, far too big for a phone.

Qualcomm has announced a new mid-range mobile processor the Snapdragon 636 at company's 4G/5G summit in Hong Kong.
