Chrome Cleanup Tool only Prevents Software Unwanted by Google

  • Chrome is getting built-in antivirus on Windows

It's important to note that this app is created to only get rid of software that affects the browsing experience.

And a game-changing update which will mute autoplay videos is also getting released to Google Chrome users in January next year.

Under the hood, we upgraded the technology we use in Chrome Cleanup to detect and remove unwanted software.

Chrome is now better at detecting when an extension has hijacked and changed user settings without explicit permission. If unwanted content is identified during the installation process, a notification gives the user the option to remove the unwanted content, cancel, or see details about what has been identified as a threat, the post noted.

It may be a good move to get rid of the malicious software, however, it will have a negative impact on the performance, Chrome has been already criticized for the RAM usage and this move will only make it worse.

Google says that subtle search results are modified as part of redirect campaigns or additional ads, but in some cases it goes far beyond that. While it seems like an all-encompassing antivirus, it will only remove software that breeches Google's unwanted software policy.

"The changes are so severe that they can make the web unusable-people are redirected to unwanted sites full of ads, and it can be next to impossible to navigate away from these pages", Google explains in a blog.

Google Chrome 62 is now available for download on desktops, but updates for Android, iOS and Chrome OS will be coming soon.

The new features didn't excite some users, though.

Google estimates that the new security feature will help "tens of millions" of Chrome users deal with security problems in the next few days. To counter that, the Chrome Cleanup feature alerts users when it detects unwanted software and offers a quick way to remove the software and return Chrome to its default settings.

They added: "We've begun to roll this out to Chrome for Windows users now".

The more powerful aspect of this new Chrome Cleanup comes through a collaboration with cybersecurity company ESET.
