  • NIA arrests Salahudin’s son in New Delhi

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday, October 24, arrested Syed Shahid Yusuf, son of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Mohammed Yusuf Shah, better known as Syed Salahuddin in connection with the 2011 terror funding case. According to NIA as reported by the news agencies, Yusuf was in contact of Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, the Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist based in Saudi Arabia.

Yousuf on Tuesday appeared before the investigation agency and was subsequently arrested. The NIA revived the investigation recently, even though the case is under trial in a city court. "It is on the basis of this irrefutable evidence that we have gone ahead with Yusuf's arrest", said NIA official.

The investigations revealed that one of the accused Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, based in Syria, allegedly transferred money to Yusuf on the directions of Salahuddin.

The four accused, Ghulam Jeelani Liloo, Farooq Ahmadin, Mohd Sidiq Ganai and Ghulam Mohd Bhat, are now remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Tihar.

The NIA in a statement charged 42-year-old Shahid Yousuf of "receiving and collecting funds through global wire money transfer" from a Saudi Arabia-based Aizaz Ahmad Bhat, who is accused of being a member of the Pakistan-based militant group. "The red notice has already been issued against both the absconding persons", NIA said in a press statement.

The NIA has also registered two others cases related to terror funding - one in November 2011 and another in May this year. Yesterday, the central government announced a new interlocutor, former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma, for a sustained dialogue with all stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, NIA had arrested nine people including Altaf Ahmed Shah, the son-in-law of hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in a terror funding case.
