Apple's statement doesn't deny most of the claims in the article, which purports to give an insider's look into squabbles over component manufacture associated with the iPhone X from the always dubious "people familiar with the situation".

"Bloomberg's claim that Apple has reduced the accuracy spec for Face ID is completely false and we expect Face ID to be the new gold standard for facial authentication". The fund owned 60,902 shares of the iPhone maker's stock after purchasing an additional 1,330 shares during the period.

Regardless of whether or not these allegations are true, Apple has seemingly done its due diligence with design and testing of the Face ID system. Expected to hit the market November 3, the supplies of the high-end gadget-which will go for around $1,000-may be constrained thanks to supply chain issues, including a bug in the 3D sensor system used for Face ID.

Another major problem could also prevent Apple from selling as many iPhone Xs as it would like.

First announced on September 12, the iPhone X is the first Apple product to include Face ID, a facial recognition system that replaces Touch ID.

The iPhone X doesn't have a fingerprint scanner, and facial recognition is the only biometric unlock mechanism for a number of iPhone features, including Apple Pay, Schneemann pointed out.

As Jony Ive explained on stage at a New Yorker event earlier this month, Apple has been working on the Face ID technology for five years.

Over the past decade, Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) financial performance has become increasingly reliant on a single product: the iPhone. Sharp and LG Innotek are other companies that have also struggled completing this task, with only 20% of the technology being usable off the assembly line. The dot projector is the main reason for the production problems. Initially there was just a one in million chance that an interloper would be able to unlock the phone.

"Two to three million handsets available on launch day and 25 million to 30 million units for the holiday quarter" predicts Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities.

According to the report, Apple did not give its suppliers extra time in addition to the standard two-year lead time to get the new, hard technology correct.

With the iPhone X set to go up on sale in India on 27 October exclusively on Flipkart, it remains to be seen just how many units are available for the Indian market. Unlike the previous several generations of iPhones, the iPhone X does not feature a Touch ID sensor for finger-based sign-ins.
