  • Former President Obama to Serve Jury Duty Month

Former President Barack Obama will serve on a jury in Cook County sometime next month, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. "He made it crystal-clear to me through his representative that he would carry out his public duty as a citizen and resident of this community", the Tribune reported Evans as saying.

Mr Evans said that the former president's security was a priority.

Evans said officials will take safety precautions and make any special arrangements needed for Obama's appearance.

If Obama somehow manages to get through the voir dire jury selection process, he would likely decide a civil or criminal case with 11 of his peers next month.

Obama owns a home in Chicago and one in Washington, D.C. Obama, who once taught constitutional law, has been a champion of civic participation and voting rights. Meanwhile, behind him, the younger Bush made an unknown comment to Obama out of the corner of his mouth, prompting his predecessor to break into laughter.

Sources told the news site that Evans had revealed the detail about Obama when discussing the importance of jury service in a public meeting on Friday. According to CBS News, the summons were sent to Obama's former home on the South Side of Chicago, but the president told the county court that he wouldn't be able to make it.

Ex-presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush also appeared for jury selection after leaving the White House.

The Tribune reported that other high-profile figures, like Oprah Winfrey, have also reported for jury duty in Cook County.

As you might have guessed, Obama isn't the first president to go to jury duty.

He is not, however, the first former president to be summoned to serve.

In March 2003, Bill Clinton became Prospective Juror No. 142 in federal court in Manhattan.

If selected to serve as a juror in Cook County, Obama - like other jurors - will be paid $17.20 for each day of service.
