A familiar South Florida face will head the Florida football program - at least until the end of the season.

Earlier this week, McElwain was the subject of criticism after he made comments about receiving death threats, and when asked to give some more details, was reportedly unable to.

UF hired McElwain from Colorado State to replace Will Muschamp after the 2014 season.

Head football coach Jim McElwain and the University of Florida parted ways on Sunday a day after the Gators lost in embarrassing fashion to the Georgia Bulldogs 42-7.

Hayes said he was told by a source that Florida legend - both as a player and coach - Steve Spurrier tried reaching out to McElwain on two separate occasions this season to offer help. We've won a few games, but we haven't won enough, haven't won a championship. Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin denied Saturday that the school had "any conversations" with the coach or his representatives "regarding a buyout of his contract", but those talks will presumably begin soon. This year, the Gators are ranked 113th nationally in total offense, averaging 336.6 yards per game. That's life. That is this business, and I take full responsibility for all of it.

Although the upgrades were overdue, not everyone appreciated the way McElwain publicly and repeatedly questioned his bosses' support, including after the Outback Bowl win in Tampa.

The coach later said the threats he mentioned happened "in the past" and that he regretted bringing them up. This was his third season as head coach coming off of back-to-back SEC East titles. Most notably, nine players - including standout receiver Antonio Callaway and starting running back Jordan Scarlett - were suspended for their alleged involvement in a credit card fraud scandal. He was 22-12 in three seasons as the head coach.
