Davey Martinez will be announced as the new manager of the Washington Nationals after the World Series, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

Fox reporter Ken Rosenthal reported Friday the Cubs' bench coach was the front-runner for the position, but an unusual source said Friday afternoon it's already a done deal.

Martinez emerged over the weekend as the Nationals' likely choice to replace Dusty Baker from a limited field of known candidates that included former Red Sox manager John Farrell and Mets hitting coach Kevin Long.

As the rookie manager takes over in Washington, his three-year deal reflects a commitment new to the Nationals. The Nationals received permission to discuss the job with him on Monday and he interviewed in Washington on Thursday, a lengthy process that included dinner with ownership.

Martinez, Joe Maddon's bench coach since 2008, interviewed recently in Washington. They did not meet with Joe Girardi, the World Series-winning manager let go by the Yankees last week. Exactly how much of Maddon has rubbed off on Martinez remains to be seen, but the Nationals' new manager does have a history of playoff success.

Major League Baseball rules prohibit a team from making any official announcement until after the World Series. That's not a small thing, after the move to hire Bud Black fell apart during negotiations a couple years ago and led to Baker's hiring.

Martinez had a 16-year career as a player from 1986-2001 for the Expos, Cubs, Rays, White Sox, Giants, Braves, Rangers, Reds and Blue Jays as an outfielder and first baseman.
