  • Report: Cleveland Browns botched chance to trade for former Alabama QB AJ McCarron

The Browns missed on a second potential answer at quarterback before the trade deadline, and this time in even more spectacular fashion.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported there was internal strife about McCarron between the Browns' coaching staff and front office and they did not send in the proper paperwork to complete the deal.

The Cleveland Browns didn't improve their roster before Tuesday's trade deadline, but they nearly acquired Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback AJ McCarron.

The Browns were willing to move second or third-round picks in the 2018 Draft for McCarron, according to ESPN.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bengals and Browns agreed to the trade at 3:55 p.m. ET. The Browns protested that ruling, but the National Football League did not agree to put the deal through so McCarron remains with the Bengals.

On 131 drop backs in 2015, McCarron posted 0.14 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back, the 12th-best mark among the 46 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs that year.

But McCarron, with three National Football League starts along with a post-season start, apparently has value. The backup came on in relief and wound up completing 66.4 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and two interceptions over seven appearances.

McCarron, taken in the fifth round of the 2014 draft, is in the final season of his rookie contract.
