Forcibly married Pakistani woman was arrested for the murder of 13 people as she gave poisoned milk to her husband, the France press reported.

Instead of him drinking the milk, it was turned into a batch of lassi, a yoghurt drink, and served to his extended family. As PBS notes, an arranged marriage distinguishes itself from other kinds of marriages (such as "love marriages" more common in the US) by the significant role that parents or older family members play in selecting a match and being involved in the union.

"Aasia concocted the plot to avenge being married against her will and was provided with poisonous substance by her alleged lover, Shahid Lashari".

13 people died, including the husband, and another 14 were admitted to the hospital. Yet he refused when she offered the milk to him. Shortly after their wedding, police said she attempted to escape to her parents' house.

Bibi then allegedly poisoned a glass of milk to murder her husband. She expressed remorse over the deaths, saying her target was only her husband.

Arranged marriage became a literal tradition in Pakistan, especially in rural and poor areas.

However, police said the woman, identified as Aasia, had confessed to poisoning milk.

Also Wednesday, in the eastern city of Lahore, a brother shot and killed his sister who had recently wedded a man of her choice without consent from her family in the latest case of so-called honor killings. A police search was under way.
