Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates World Food India 2017

The three-day-long event, is organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

Describing the food processing sector as a top priority for his government's "Make In India" initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, asked farmers and industrialists to link their potential and India's traditions to world requirements, as he inaugurated the World Food India 2017 trade fair at Vigyan Bhavan in the Capital. "And that change is visible". This is the first time that India is hosting an event for the food processing sector. He added India's GDP growth in future will be driven by areas that have not exploited their full potential so far.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed confidence that World Food India will help transform the Indian food economy.

India is expected to attract an investment of United States $10 billion in food processing sector and generate 1 million jobs in the next 3 years. It is rapidly progressing in the "Global Innovation Index", "Global Logistics Index" and "Global Competitiveness Index".

India will host over 2,000 participants and over 200 companies from 30 countries.

"As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and having a 1.3 billion population base, a 600 billion dollar retail sector is said to treble to 1.3 trillion by 2020 and 70 per cent of this sector in food retail".
