  • Reports: Gunman wounds several during Sunday church service in Texas

A man opened fire inside of a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing multiple people and wounding others before being "taken down", authorities said.

Sherri Pomeroy, wife of Pastor Frank Pomeroy, said in a text message that she lost her daughter "and many friends" in the shooting.

Ms Pomeroy says both she and her husband were out of town when the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, outside of San Antonio, was attacked and were trying to return.

The community of Sutherland Springs, where the population numbers in the hundreds, is a small unincorporated area in Wilson County approximately 30 miles southeast of San Antonio.

The gunman's motive is unknown, and authorities have not said whether Sunday's incident was terror related.

Witnesses described a shooter opening fire during the church service followed by a brief vehicle chase by police.

President Donald Trump said he was monitoring the situation while in Japan on a 12-day Asian trip. "Our thanks to law enforcement for their response". The official toll has not yet been verified by law enforcement or local officials.

The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting in the aftermath of the shooting, according to the Associated Press.

Carrie Matula, who works at a nearby gas station near, told MSNBC she heard what sounded like semiautomatic gunfire coming from the modest, white clapboard church with a red door. "It lasted about 15 seconds", she said.

The University Health System in San Antonio shared on Facebook that its trauma team is caring for nine patients related to the shooting - four children and five adults. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted "keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers".
