Intel and AMD are forming an unholy laptop chip alliance

  • AMD shares surge on a report of laptop chip deal with Intel to fight off Nvidia

Indeed, the company has teamed up with AMD to create a new processor design using its competitor's superior Radeon graphics instead of its own integrated GPU solutions. We're here to help with the best CPUs for gaming.

Chip rivals AMD and Intel today unveiled a partnership that will take on fellow chip maker Nvidia in high-performance graphics. The two companies have been competing tooth and nail for decades, and to see a partnership like this appear now - especially in a year when AMD has restored itself as a competitive brand with their Ryzen desktop CPUs - is nothing short of staggering. It says the Intel chips are designed for intensive gamers where the Ryzen chips can handle games but aren't specifically designed for that goal.

According to AMD this is not a licensing deal and there has been no transfer or license of IP to Intel.

It's been a whirlwind year in the PC market, in no small part thanks to the return of AMD. It's no revolutionary idea, however, and the concept has been put into use a fair few times previously and to varying degrees of success.

The new chips will be part of Intel's 8th-generation Core H mobile processors, and will not only feature a discrete-level graphics cards, but also have built-in High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) RAM packed onto a single board.

Intel has essentially worked with Sunnyvale-based Advanced Micro Devices to develop and integrate the necessary memory technology and graphics chip from Radeon Technologies. This allows for real-time monitoring of temperature, power, and performance - yet again, not unlike AMD's Infinity Fabric.

Looking at the current crop of gaming laptops on the market, Intel said it recognized an opportunity to build thinner, lighter, and more powerful enthusiast mobile platforms aimed at delivering a premium experience. With personal computers seeing lackluster sales, the one bright spot has been high-end laptops that can play these graphic-intensive games. Targeting high-performance, yet ultra-slim and power efficient laptops and 2-in-1s, has made up the initial focus of their soon-to-release Raven Ridge APU.

The power sharing framework is a connection among the processor, graphics chip, and graphics memory, with software drivers and interfaces in the semi-custom discrete GPU that coordinates information among all three elements. But while Ryzen has picked up plenty of steam, we're yet to see any competition from AMD in gaming laptops as of yet.

While I'm sure a little Intel money is an incredibly persuasive argument alone, AMD are likely to benefit from the increase share than Intel can offer them for their Radeon graphics tech, while at the same time forcing competitors Nvidia to hitch another ride somewhere that isn't off Intel's back.
