  • Zimbabwe's Mugabe sacks vice-president Mnangagwa

G40 is determined to stop Mnangagwa taking over from the 93-year-old President Mugabe, preferring instead defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi.

Mugabe's dramatic move came after a weekend of high drama between Mnangagwa and Grace Mugabe after which the president appeared to finally back his wife in the succession race.

His removal will boost the presidential ambitions of Mr Mugabe's wife Grace, 52, who told supporters at a stadium in the capital city of Harare on Sunday that she was ready to take over.

"It had become evident that his conduct in his discharge of his duties had become inconsistent with his official responsibilities". It followed a speech by Mugabe at a rally on Saturday where he publicly rebuked his deputy for the first time.

She had earlier called on her husband to remove his vice-president.

Moyo is under probe by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for abuse of money from the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (ZimDef), while Kasukuwere received no confidence votes from the ruling party's 10 administrative provinces on accusations creating parallel structures to topple President Robert Mugabe.

The brief announcement was made by government spokesman and Zanu PF chairman SK Moyo and was aired on the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation's radio and on other state media, such as The Herald newspaper.
