  • DC Comics Signs Brian Michael Bendis to Exclusive Contract

While bloodthirsty fanboys will forever continue the DC vs. Marvel debate, the fact of the matter is that there are many of us who enjoy stories released by both publishers.

In a stunning move that will affect the comic industry for years to come, Brian Michael Bendis has confirmed his departure from Marvel Comics.

Marvel declined to comment on Bendis's four ongoing Marvel titles, the announced Punisher: End of Days miniseries, or the continued publication of his creator-owned work through Icon.

"This is real", Bendis tweeted. "Change is good. Change is healthy". I am bursting with ideas and inspiration. A Marvel spokesperson thanked Bendis for his tenure with the company and wished him luck with his future projects.

Although critical reaction to Bendis' work has had swings - he was the writer behind the recent, miserable crossover event Civil War II - Bendis is a crucial writer behind several major books at Marvel at the moment, including Spider-Man, Invincible Iron Man (where he created and shepherded in Riri Williams, the young black MIT student now standing in for Tony Stark as the Iron Avenger), The Defenders, and Jessica Jones.

This will be the first time that Bendis has written regularly for DC Comics, following a long and eventful (no pun intended) career at Marvel, kicked off with his work on Ultimate Spider-Man, where he eventually co-created and introduced Miles Morales as Spider-Man.

Bendis was also the writer behind the story of Iceman, from the X-Men, revealing that he is gay, and the introduction of Riri Williams, a black 15-year-old genius who donned the armour of Iron Man, and has become the superhero Ironheart.
