The NFL owners appear to be headed to a war amongst themselves as Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has reportedly threatened to sue other owners over Roger Goodell's next contract, a five-year deal that appears to be close to being finalized.

According to ESPN, Goodell is furious that his next contract might be performance-based.

The move could set up a war between owners, with some backing Jones and others supporting Goodell.

The New York Times report said the threats over Goodell's extension "stems from Jones's anger over the commissioner's suspending" of Elliott.

Though the sources didn't know that person's identity, the fact that Jones might be teeing up his own candidate has lost him potential support in ousting Goodell. Jones is one of the most powerful owners in the league, but he's in a battle he may struggle to win. ESPN reported as far back as September that Jones was delaying contract-extension negotiations, with one source then telling ESPN that negotiations would be done if not for Jones.

Jones, upset with the Goodell's six-game suspension levied against Ezekiel Elliott, told six owners at a recent meeting that he had hired David Boies, who recently has come under fire for representing Harvey Weinstein as the now-disgraced movie producer fought sexual harassment claims. As Belson noted, Jones is potentially taking on the league, Goodell, and fellow owners.

But most National Football League owners, while recognizing that Goodell has failed in a variety of capacities, know that the commissioner was crucial in negotiating an owner-friendly collective bargaining agreement with the players' union back in 2011.
