The four-person ridesharing flights won't become a reality anytime soon but Holden said there are plans for demonstrations of the flying auto network in Los Angeles, in addition to previously announced cities, Dallas and Dubai, in 2020.

Uber previously unveiled its plans to introduce flying taxi fleets, known as uberAIR, in April. Similar to helicopters, the eVTOL aircraft would take off and land on the tops of buildings and be able to cover distances more quickly and directly compared to cars stuck in traffic on Los Angeles congested roads.

Last year, we took a ride in one of Uber's self-driving cars, and it was an unusual feeling, but streaking across the sky may have it beat.

Moreover, Holden said it would actually be cheaper to fly with Uber than your own auto.

A movie previewing the air service shows that it will function much like Uber's current app, through which users can order a taxi on-demand with payments automatically deducted from stored card details. Dallas-Fort Worth is the first USA launch partner, while Dubai will be the first global city. It seems Uber is now counting on its partnership with NASA to alleviate that concern by working with the agency on Unmanned Traffic Management and Unmanned Aerial Systems projects.

Partnering with government bodies hasn't been Uber's strong suit, although under new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, it's certainly now a priority. Holden said the vehicles would let people "fly over LA traffic". On Wednesday, Uber and NASA announced a partnership to combine their two projects, with a goal in mind: to get flying Ubers in the air and safe for passengers in time for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, CNBC reports.

Jeff Holden, Uber's chief product officer, told NBC News the agreement with NASA is part of ensuing the program proceeds safely.

The company has partnered with manufacturers to design and build a network of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

"UberAir will be performing far more flights over cities on a daily basis than has ever been done before", Holden said. But the company has already teamed up with the cities of Dallas and Dubai to help bring this futuristic idea to life.

The contract with Nasa comes as Uber appeals against having its London taxi licence revoked over safety fears.
