  • Green Bay Packers tight end Martellus Bennett celebrates after making a pass reception during the first half of an NFL football game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday Oct. 22 2017 in Green Bay Wis

Released on Tuesday by the Green Bay Packers, Martellus Bennett has been claimed on waivers by his former team, the New England Patriots according to Adam Schefter.

The Packers waived him with the designation that he failed to disclose a physical condition. He was added to the injury report with a shoulder injury after the Packers' recent bye week.

Bennett spent the 2016 season with the Patriots when he had 55 receptions for 702 yards and seven touchdown receptions. The team signed running back LeGarrette Blount following his release from the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2014 season. In his seven games for the green and gold, he had 24 catches for 233 yards.

General manager Ted Thompson announced the move on Wednesday after practice. He was a major part of New England's championship squad, filling in for star tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed most of the season with injuries.

Bennett was signed as an unrestricted free agent last offseason to a three-year deal worth $21m.

The New England Patriots are bringing back a familiar figure for the stretch run.

There's also a possibility that Bennett hangs up his cleats after this season.

"After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next 8 games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", Bennett wrote.

Fantasy Impact Bennett was largely a bust this season after high expectations when he made a decision to join the Packers and Aaron Rodges. These next games are for you. Last year, the prospect of seeing the Patriots deploy the duo of Gronkowski and Bennett was exciting for Patriots fans.
