Disneyland has shut down two cooling towers at its theme park after a dozen cases, including one death, from Legionnaire's disease - a serious respiratory illness caused by the Legionella bacteria - were reported in Anaheim.
Ten of the 12 people who became ill were hospitalized. The deceased was not among the persons that visited the park.
One of the three cases not linked to Disneyland was fatal, the agency said.
In Orange County, 55 cases of the disease have been reported this year. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chief medical officer Dr. Pamela Hymel noted in a statement on the matter that Disney was informed on October 27 about the potential link the park had to the recent Legionnaires' disease reports.
About three weeks ago, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified county authorities of several cases of the disease among people who had traveled to Orange County in September. The towers will reopen after it's confirmed they are no longer contaminated. Disney independently made a decision to take the towers out of operation the day before, Good said. "We conducted a review and learned that two cooling towers had elevated levels of Legionella bacteria", the statement said.
The towers traced to the outbreak were located near the New Orleans Square Train Station, both towers more than 100 feet from public areas.
The towers are shut down as they are treated with chemicals that kill this type of bacteria. "We have proactively shared this information with OCHCA (Orange County Health Care Agency) and given our actions".
Jessica Good, a spokeswoman for the OC Health Care Agency, told the newspaper on Friday that 12 people, ages 52 to 94, were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease.
The bacteria commonly is found in water systems and poses no threat to humans at low levels. It is usually found in freshwater settings, according to the health site, and "often spreads through contaminated water systems".
Eight guests and one worker at Disneyland have contracted Legionnaires' disease, prompting the Anaheim, Calif., theme park to close a pair of cooling towers.
