New King of Corvettes

  • First Look: With the new 2019 Corvette ZR1, Chevy builds the best 'Vette yet

Other key features are two aero packages. In fact, it has the highest output of any Chevrolet production vehicle ever. Its 6.2L supercharged V8 LT5 develops 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque. The biggest surprise, of course, is the power. That was the first real confirmation that the ZR1 was coming and with that news came our first look at the new supercharged Corvette. A Ferrari 812 Superfast will still embarrass you in the parking lot, but only by 34 HP. Chevrolet says the supercharger offers 52 per cent more displacement than the LT4's supercharger. To help with the extra boost, Chevy built a dual-fuel-injection system, which utilises direct injection for most of the heavy lifting, but supplements with extra port injectors when needed. It's the first time in the ZR1's prolific existence that it has been made available with an automatic gearbox. As a powertrain mechanic with seven gears or automatic eight. It features Active Rev Matching, which Chevrolet debuted on the current-generation Corvette. With a top speed quoted at "over 210 mph", they're not wrong.

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 comes as close as ever to giving foreign supercar brands like Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini a real run for the money - and, indeed, at $130,000, this 755 horsepower King Kong Corvette is a veritable bargain.

The ZR1 hits dealerships in the spring.

Along with baseball, hot dogs, and the Fourth of July, the Chevrolet Corvette is about as American is it gets.

Do you want to go fast, or do you want to go around corners?

Last week, the cover of the December Car & Driver introduced us to the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 when the magazine cover leaked early. The first of these adds a "low" rear wing.

Unlike many cars, however, the ZR1 has two optional packs that help improve the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Chevrolet states that the top speed of the new ZR1 is an astonishing 210 miles per hour. Also optional is the high wing, which increases downforce by an estimated 431kg.

Still, as you'd hope, that's not to say that the converse isn't true in either case.

Two aero packages will be available for the all-new ZR1; the standard Low Wing and the two-way adjustable High Wing.

The High Wing is part of the ZTK Performance Package, which also throws in a giant front splitter with carbon fibre end caps, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and specific tuning for the chassis and Magnetic Ride Control dampers, delivering greater cornering grip. This is the most powerful version of the Corvette ever to go into production.
