Android Oreo runs on 0.3 percent of devices: Google

  • Android 8.1 Oreo will free up space by shrinking apps you don't use

For years, we've been writing about Google's failure to roll out the latest versions of its operating system to vendors in a timely fashion, but despite promises to the contrary, Google has failed to make any significant progress to date.

Programmer Dan Luu created a graph from the version distribution data, which appears to show a smaller fraction of Android users are benefitting from the latest version.

As he notes, one obvious reason for the existence of more devices running older versions of Android is that some active devices are now a decade old.

Android Oreo comes with numerous enhancements over the Android Nougat such as faster booting, extended battery life by cutting down on unnecessary activities of apps in the background, more fluid experiences to phones and tablets as well as improvements in security via Google Play Protect that checks suspicious activities and malware in applications.

Luu attributes the malaise to a combination of three possible factors; Android growth is slowing down, Android device turnover is slowing down and that fewer devices are receiving updates. The interesting part is that this 0.3 percent gives us a perspective about how lax the rollout for latest updates for Android-powered smartphones is across the market. Of course, we're talking about Android fragmentation.

The Android distribution numbers are in for November, and Oreo is up to 0.3%.

Year after year, owners of expensive flagship devices are forced to wait more than six months for OS updates and the problem is showing no signs of abating.

Just like Android 8.1, this is still in beta and there is no official announcement on when it will move into the stable stage and be ready to consumers.
