"Regarding Abu Kamal, this is not the only case when the US spares terrorists", Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russia's official TASS news agency on Tuesday. Another photo was taken from a mobile game AC-130 Gunship Simulator: "Special Ops Squadron".

Another image was identified by the Russian military research site Conflict Intelligence Team and the investigative website Bellingcat as a shot from footage of Iraq taken in 2016.

The defence ministry claims the jihadist fighters operate disguised as members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with United States support and that the government offensive on Abu Kamal has interrupted American plans to create a pro-US area on the eastern shore of the Euphrates River.

Researchers at Conflict Intelligence Team, a nonprofit group that investigates Russian military activities, subsequently reported that three other images shared by Russia as "irrefutable evidence" of US forces assisting the Islamic State were actually taken from video released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense in 2016.

If the video clip wasn't enough proof to connect the stills with the game and debunk the evidence, you'll also notice that some of the stills even have part of the developer's disclaimers left in the images.

"The US refused to bomb an ISIS convoy fleeing from Abu Kamal under the pretext of the Convention on prisoners of war". In the top-right corner, you can see the beginnings of the statement from the video that claims the footage shown was work-in-progress gameplay and that all of the content shown is subject to change.

A later press release said it had launched a probe into the actions of a civilian employee of one of its subdivisions who "mistakenly attached photos" to the first version of its statement. "As proof, the MoD's social media account posted what they claimed were Russian drone photos of the convoy heading towards the Syrian-Iraqi border", the group said.

The pictures turned out to be screenshots from a video game and old videos shot in Iraq.

Russian Federation re-published the video writing, "The U.S. are actually covering the ISIS combat units to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote the American interests in the Middle East".
