In 2016, there were 684 anti-Jewish hate crime incidents, marking a slight increase from 664 in 2015, the release said. The institution reported five crimes related to race or ethnicity, 11 related to religion, four related to sexual orientation and one related to gender.

The report showed a rise in crimes motivated by hatred of a religion, and a majority were against Jews and Muslims.

This year's data indicates that 1.2 percent of hate crimes were related to disability.

Civil-rights groups like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) say the figures don't paint an accurate picture of the volume of hate crimes being committed, because of what they term "systemic under-reporting".

The Bureau, among others, registered 12 anti-Hindu hate crimes, seven anti-Sikh hate crimes and one case against the Buddhist community. By comparison, in 2016, there were 62 hate crimes against Catholics and 15 against Protestants.

"We should be devoting significant resources to combating the insidious spread of hate-motivated attacks, including greater incentives for local enforcement to report these crimes", said the senator. More than half of the incidents were motivated by the victim's race, ethnicity or ancestry. Of these reported offenses, nearly 25 percent were rooted in an anti-Islamic, anti-Muslim bias.

In a June investigation, New Times partnered with the investigative-reporting nonprofit ProPublica to take its own tally of hate crimes across the Sunshine State.

The FBI began recording hate crime data in 1990.

Earlier this month, the ADL said the first nine months of 2017 saw a 67 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents compared to the same period of 2016.

The report differentiated between crimes against trans Americans and those who are gender-nonconforming: Anti-trans crimes increased from 73 to 105 between 2015 and 2016, a jump of almost 43%. And of these reported offenders, 46.3 percent were white. However, Pew adds that anti-Muslim intimidation is not at an all-time high.

In a statement, Sessions said his agency will seek to make sure individuals "can live without fear of being a victim of violent crime based on who they are, what they believe, or how they worship".
