Airbus lands biggest-ever order with $49.5bn deal for 430 airliners

  • Airbus and Boeing sign deals worth $75bn at Dubai air show

The planes will be used by Kuwait's resurrected Wataniya Airlines.

The deal is reported to be worth around $50 billion, with Airbus set to supply the planes to four airline companies, Mexico's Volaris, Chilean carrier JetSmart and Hungary's Wizz Air, all of which Franke's Indigo Partners holds shares.

According to commentators, the deal marked a dramatic turnaround for Airbus, which had been lagging behind Boeing in the contest for orders so far this year and had a bad start to the 12 -16 November air show.

The week saw orders, commitments and agreements for 746 aircraft announced by worldwide manufacturers, with a global value of £63 billion. Buyers typically receive discounts of 40% to 60% on the list prices, but can get even bigger reductions for really huge deals.

The airline had announced orders for 288 planes as of the end of October.

Airbus and Boeing went into the air show with 288 and 605 net orders, respectively.

It's about selling 430 airplanes from the A320 family to be bought by the American company Indigo Partners. But at this stage, it's still a memorandum of understanding, a non-binding agreement that needs to be finalized before it is considered a firm order.

AerCap is also behind a leasing deal to provide EgyptAir with six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which will start operating in 2019.

But the biggest order by value came from Emirates airline of Dubai in 2013. The show recorded deals worth $113.8 billion.

"During this year's event, we signed an MoU with Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries, expanding our support of its customer's fleet in the region", said Turkish Technic spokesman, Muhammed Memduhoglu.

The deal marks a major coup for Airbus's Chief Operating Officer John Leahy, who is expected to leave the group soon at the end of a career in which he oversaw the sale of almost 15,000 planes. He sold tens of thousands of jetliners for the European plane maker, helping it draw alongside its big USA rival in terms of both sales and deliveries.
