One of the founding members of AC/DC, among the best-selling bands in recorded music history, died Saturday.

"Renowned for his musical prowess Malcolm was a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary who inspired many", the statement said.

The 64-year-old passed away surrounded by family following a long battle with dementia. The place of his death was not shared, though the statement mentioned that he "passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside". Young later announced his departure from the band in 2014 due to health reasons that were later revealed to be dementia.

Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC. "Malcolm was the heart and soul of AC/DC and as fine an example as any to rhythm guitarists everywhere".

AC/DC's first show was staged in a Bondi Beach nightclub on New Year's Eve in 1973. His razor-sharp production cast the band's inherent melodicism into an even greater light, and the album was an worldwide hit that over the years has sold more than 7 million copies in the US alone. The band's original lead singer, Bon Scott, died in 1980. It remains one of the top 10 best-sellers in RIAA history.

"It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother", read a statement posted to the band's website. AC/DC was as electric as its name promised, and it played the hardest straight up rock and roll around. In its materials, the Hall of Fame called the band's music "scorched-earth, metallic hard rock which has rarely deviated from a template of headbanging-inducing guitar riffs, flashy drums and banshee-yell vocals".

Young and his brother Angus created AC/DC in the early 1970s.

"So sad to learn of the passing of yet another friend, Malcolm Young", Osbourne tweeted. The experience was "very unusual for him", Angus told the magazine, "but he was always a confident guy, and we made it work".

It's been a hard time for the family, as they lost their brother George in October, Rolling Stone reports. From the beginning, he always knew what he wanted to accomplish, and with his younger brother, he has conquered the music scene by giving the best of himself at every concert.
