  • George Clooney Will Star in and Direct 'Catch 22' Series

George Clooney will make his return to television in a serialised adaptation of Catch-22, Paramount Television said on Thursday, almost 20 years after he left hit show "ER" to become one of film's biggest names.

George Clooney is set to star in and direct Catch-22, a six-part limited series based on Joseph Heller's novel, for Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

"Catch-22" - which will have a script written by Luke Davies and David Michod - follows U.S. airman Yossarian and his attempts to avoid the fighting in Italy during World War II, as he knows the situation is likely to end in death.

Clooney and his producing partner Grant Heslov will direct.

The role will mark Clooney's first regular television role since he broke out on the medical drama "E.R." in the early 1990s.

56 year-old Clooney will play Colonel Cathcart in an adaptation of the 1961 satire, which follows an American soldier trapped in a bureaucratic nightmare while serving in World War Two. On the big-screen, Clooney's work includes an Oscar win for his supporting turn in Syriana and as part of the cast of best picture victor Argo. Richard Brown and Steve Golin will executive produce for Anonymous Content along with Clooney and Heslov under their Smokehouse Pictures banner.

A full-length film was shot on the basis of a 1970 novel. The package - co-written by Luke Davies (Lion) and David Michod (War Machine) will be shopped in December.
