"The PVMBG Emergency Response Team found [volcanic] ash, however, the intensity of the ash [falling on the villages] is still light", head of mitigation sub-directorate at PVMBG, Devi Kemal, said on Tuesday evening.

But the alert level has not been addressed to the extent that "it is not a rash", said the Centre for volcanology and management of geological hazards.

The Australian government advises all Australian tourists in Bali to monitor local media, follow instructions from local authorities and ensure they have travel insurance.

The danger zone around the 3,142-metre Mount Agung was also reduced from a radius of 9 to 12 kilometres from the peak in different areas to a radius of 6 to 7.5 km.

"People are encouraged to remain calm".

"The volcanic activity at Mount Agung is decreasing.but it must be understood that it still has the potential to erupt", the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a statement.

Last time Bali's Mount Agung erupted 50 years ago, 1,600 people died in lava, mudslides and 1,000C gas clouds. Since then the mount has been rumbling intermittently.

The alert level remains at three after it was downgraded from the maximum level of four on October 29.

The official said the eruption was 'phreatic, ' which occurs when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma.

"Time to make sure you are prepared and keep an eye on official Agung information".

Meanwhile, airlines are keeping a close eye on possible flight cancellations, but the airport remains open with no changes so far.

Indonesia is home to about 130 volcanoes because it is located in the highly seismic area known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire".
