  • Dish Network customers lost access to their CBS channels for three days this week before Dish and CBS ended their dispute over carriage fees Thursday night

The standoff between to companies reportedly occurred when CBS wanted Dish to bundle its modestly rated channels in with the main CBS channel, and this is something Dish was quite hesitant to do. Now, less than a week later, Dish has announced that it has signed a new multi-year carriage deal with CBS.

Besides Chicago, other affected markets were NY (where CBS owns WCBS and WLNY), Los Angeles (KCBS and KCAL), Philadelphia (KYW and WPSG), Dallas (KTVT and KTXA), San Francisco (KPIX and KBCW), Atlanta (WUPA), Boston (WBZ and WSBK), Seattle (KSTW), Tampa (WTOG), Detroit (WWJ and WKBD), Minneapolis (WCCO), Miami (WFOR and WBFS), Denver (KCNC), Sacramento (KOVR and KMAX), Pittsburgh (KDKA and WPCW) and Baltimore (WJZ). Dish's 13.2 million customers are important to advertisers on CBS, which also counts on the satellite carrier's subscriber fees. The antenna offer was based on the reception available at the subscriber's home.

The blackout affected almost 4 million Dish Network subscriber homes - including 400,000 in the Los Angeles region.

In a statement, CBS asserted Dish's failure to negotiate "a fair carriage deal that reflects the current marketplace", is a common business practice for the company.

Dish has been involved in numerous TV blackouts over the last four years, including losing 129 Sinclair Broadcast Group stations in August 2015, the biggest TV blackout ever.

The blackout kept Dish subscribers in the affected markets from watching CBS' coverage of Thursday's Chargers-Dallas Cowboys NFL game and other programming and threatened Friday and Saturday's college football coverage and Sunday's NFL broadcasts. This may be an unforgivable sin to some, but both Disk and CBS have come to an agreement to settle the dispute and restore services to subscribers that were affected by the blackout.
