U.S. gun background checks hit new record on Black Friday

  • The first customers at Superior Firearms in Tyler Texas lined up to pay for their purchases on Black Friday

The FBI reported that they received 203,086 requests to conduct instant background checks for gun purchases, the highest amount ever received in one single day.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday ordered a review of a government database used for background checks on gun buyers, after a man who killed 26 people in a Texas church was left off the system despite having a criminal record. The record before that had also been set on Black Friday, 2015, when there were 185,345 checks.

Many Americans helped set a new record after using their Black Friday to purchase something a little different from the usual electronics.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased. The two previous records also were recorded on Black Friday.

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would lure in customers on Black Friday and boost recently slagging sales.

And even though gun sales were down during the first year of the Trump administration, gun sales tend to increase following mass shootings. In fact, November 24, which fell just weeks after 26 people were killed in a shooting at a Texas church, saw the Federal Bureau of Investigation receive more than 200,000 requests for gun background checks.

The review was ordered by Attorney General Jeff Sessions following revelations that a gun rampage at a Texas church which left 26 people dead was committed by a former United States airman who had been legally stripped of his right to own weapons.

There have been other cases in which the shooter was legally barred from buying or possessing a gun, but was able to buy the parts and build it themselves. The Air Force reportedly failed to place information about the gunman's prior court-martial conviction for assaulting his wife and his stepson into a database used to screen individuals attempting to obtain firearms. The objective of the review is to determine why necessary information was not being properly reported to the NICS database.
