As many as 60 cases of custodial deaths or disappearance from lock-ups were reported in the country in 2016 of which 12 were in Maharashtra, nine each in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, five in Madhya Pradesh, four in Punjab, three each in Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh and two in Rajasthan.

There were a total of 38,947 rapes in 2016, compared to 34,651 in 2015.

In the country's top 19 metropolitan cities with a population over 20 lakh, Mumbai ranks 3rd in the share of crime incidents, preceded only by Delhi and Chennai.

The national average of crimes against women in states was 55.2. While the number of cases recorded under IPC Sections 370 and 370 (A) (human traficking) recorded in Delhi stood at 166, Hyderabad was second with 116 cases out of the total 380 cases recorded in metropolitan cities in the country. While UP accounted for 9.5 per cent of total IPC cases in the country. However, policing still left a lot to be desired, they added. Robbery cases nearly doubled in the state from 377 in 2015 to 671 in 2016. "The definition used to be narrow earlier but now it encompasses many more offences", said Rashmi Singh, former director of National Mission for Empowerment of Women. Andhra Pradesh with 2335 cases topped the list with Karnataka recording the second highest number of cases with 1869.

The crime rate in Maharashtra has increased marginally from 355.19 crimes per 1 lakh citizens registered in 2015 to 357.41 crimes per 1 lakh citizens in 2016. "We have also created 44 cyber labs across Maharashtra".

Experts said the spurt in cybercrimes had come especially in the post-demonetization period. Madhya Pradesh, which is led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was second on the list with 8.9% crimes, whereas Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra was third with 8.8%. Today, the Indian information technology (IT) law goes soft on cyber crime, especially after the 2008 amendment because except cyber terrorism and child pornography, all other cybercrime offences are bailable.

Maharashtra's Superintendent of Police (SP), Cyber, Balsingh Rajput said the awareness among people in Maharashtra is good. Agencies such as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) seized 350,000kg of contraband substances in 2016.
