  • BREAKING: Christmas market EVACUATED as 'bomb found' – armed police on scene

German police have said a package containing nails, wires, batteries, fireworks and powder found near a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Potsdam near Berlin did not contain an ignition device. Potsdam police said it was too soon who may have been responsible.

Local media reports that the package was delivered to a pharmacy but was reported as suspicious when an employee found wires inside.

"The suspicion of an improvised explosive device has been confirmed", German police said on Twitter.

The Reuters agency cited the Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten newspaper, which described the package as 40 cm (15.75 inches) by 50 cm large. No additional details were immediately available.

Residents of the street were told to stay in the back of their homes while the procedure was carried out. "If it was really explosive or if it was a fake or a dummy, we will only know through further investigation".

A temporary memorial to the victims of last year's attack is set to be replaced by a permanent one on December 19, at the historic Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on the site of the market that was attacked.
