Major changes bring rain then cold air to Alabama

  • UK Weather: Arctic cold snap to bring snow and 60mph winds next week

The breezy conditions will continue Thursday when it is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 44.

Some model forecasts had teased the possibility of a coastal storm throwing back some more substantial snow into the cold air late Thursday into Friday, but we've never really bought into that idea. An associated cold front will pass through the state Tuesday allowing Arctic air to infiltrate central IN mid-to-late week.

Tuesday will be a soaker with periods of heavy rain expected throughout the day.

We will likely start Tuesday in the upper 50°s to near 60°, but once the front passes temperatures will drop quickly.

The Weather Service says there is a slight chance of snow on Friday, followed by a chance for rain mixed with snow. Rain chances this afternoon will remain low at 30%, but you may want to carry the umbrella for the chance of a couple of showers.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Thursday looks fairly quiet - mostly cloudy with a high between 48 and 51.

FRIDAY NIGHT/SATURDAY: A clipper will move in from the northwest and have the potential to produce a few snow flurries or showers Friday night and Saturday over the northern third of Alabama.

Tuesday: Occasional showers, with up to a half-inch possible.

Any snow we see between Thursday and the weekend is likely to result from clippers, fast-moving disturbances from the northwest limited in moisture.

Upper 60s are in store for the northeast and east central portions of the state Sunday, while the southeast will see low 70s.

WEDNESDAY: Clouds linger, with temperatures holding in the 40s most of the day.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy; low of 23. Meteorologists are putting the chances at about 20 to 40 percent.

The weekend could end with the coldest air so far this season, with a high only in the upper 30s on Sunday despite sunshine.

But the mercury will plunge as the week progresses, forecasters warned - with more snow likely to fall.
