Shohei Ohtani rules out Red Sox and Yankees, prefers West Coast

  • Japanese star Shohei Ohtani won't be signing with the Twins

That list followed reports Sunday that the Yankees, who many had expected to be a significant factor in the sweepstakes, had been eliminated from consideration.

Late Sunday night, it was announced that Japanese two-way player (I won't call him a star anymore until he proves it in the majors) Shohei Ohtani informed the Yankees he would not be signing with them.

The Yankees were not the only team to learn they would not be in the running for Ohtani.

"I know that our presentation was excellent", Cashman said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because not all teams had announced whether they were in or out.

Cashman also told reporters that Ohtani seems to prefer West Coast teams and smaller markets. The winning team will, however, pay Ohtani's current employer, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, $20 million for the right to negotiate with the standout hitter/pitcher.

Among the teams meeting with Ohtani are the Rangers, who have the most global money to offer ($3.54 million) and the Giants, who have $1.84 million available.

He has expressed a desire to pitch and to play the outfield in the big leagues, and one could easily see Joe Maddon being the type of manager that would permit that kind of flexibility if Otani were to sign with the Cubs.

The next step in the process is face-to-face meetings between Ohtani and the finalists. The Mariners have reportedly told several of their players to come to LA in order to meet with Ohtani.
