Besieged by allegations of sexual harassment, Democratic Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday, bringing an abrupt end to the civil rights leader's almost 53-year career on Capitol Hill.

"When Rep. Conyers inappropriately touched me like this", said Grubbs, as reported by the paper, "my eyes would pop out and I would be stunned in disbelief".

John Conyers told a Detroit area radio show that he'll step down from his seat in Congress Tuesday and publicly endorsed his son to replace him once he leaves Capitol Hill.

A number of fellow Democrats have called on Conyers to resign, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee.

Days later, the congressman stepped down as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee during a congressional ethics probe of the sexual harassment allegations. Another woman alleges she was sacked by Conyers after she rejected his advances and subsequently settled a wrongful dismissal claim with the congressman. Shortly thereafter, the RNC renewed their financial support of Roy Moore's campaign.

The news comes after Conyers' great-nephew, 29-year old MI state Senator Ian Conyers, told CBS News' Jonathan Blakely he would be running for the elder Conyers' seat.

When asked if Congress should disclose the details of settlements made by other lawmakers in cases of sexual misconduct or harassment, Conyers replied with "a strong, unequivocal yes".

"I'm a little bit interested in why the Speaker of the House called for his resignation and has been radio silent on Blake Farenthold, a settlement that was three times Conyers' was", Clyburn said.

"John Conyers is a great friend, he's a great American, and I'm sure after consultation with his family he made the right decision", said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., another former black caucus chair.

Conyers was first elected to the House in 1964.

Grubbs' affidavit says that she worked for Conyers in various roles from approximately 2001 to about 2013.

Conyers said he did not feel as if he was given due process regarding the allegations, but that it doesn't come as a shock to him, having gone through this with others and worked in the area of constitutional issues and due process in particular for many years.

Grubbs witnessed assault on other women.

However, he said today that despite all this, he is confident in his legacy. He added that he hopes his retirement will be viewed in the "larger perspective" of his more than 50 years as a lawmaker.

He co-sponsored a 1972 resolution recommending President Richard Nixon's impeachment for his conduct of the Vietnam War and regularly introduced a bill from 1989 onward to study the harm caused by slavery and the possibility of reparations to the descendants of slaves.

Conyers became an icon during the civil rights movement.

As allegations of sexual misconduct continue to swirl around him, several of Conyers' congressional colleagues encouraged him to resign.
