Gov. Abbott orders flags to half-staff to honor fallen San Marcos officer

Drivers along Interstate 35 from Austin to San Marcos will notice a large presence of first responders Tuesday afternoon as they move fallen Officer Kenneth Copeland's body from the morgue to the funeral home.

San Marcos officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, was killed in the line of.

San Marcos is about 30 miles south of Austin.

He and other SMPD officers were serving a warrant in the subdivision when the suspect shot him multiple times.

The officer was taken to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos and pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m. He is survived by his wife and four children, according to Dallas News.

"Ken's a hero", Stapp told reporters. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows that we're short-handed and need the help. The unidentified suspect shot at all officers on the scene, but Copeland was the only one hit - and the bullets struck parts of his body unprotected by body armor.

City leaders also say they're committed to celebrating Officer Copeland's life and legacy.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) offered his condolences to Copeland's family and ordered the city's flags lowered to half-staff in his honor. We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day.

The officer is the 119th law enforcement official to be killed in the line of duty this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. We have to appreciate the fine men and women who are out there serving the public's interest in their jobs.
