Instagram finally lets you save Stories so people can enjoy them forever

  • Instagram launches biggest change to profiles in years, adding new stories and archive features

Instagram is working on several other new features, and reportedly inviting people to test the beta version of its Android and iOS apps. "Stories Highlights" is a new part of your profile where you can express more of who you are through stories you've shared, whereas "Stories Archive" privately saves your Stories for viewing them later. Nine times out of 10, it absolutely won't be as good as you remembered, but having the option to resurrect a Story is something I've certainly found myself thinking about on more than one occasion.

Each of the updates adds new appeal to Story content - not only does it give your Stories added value, but it gives you an additional way to spruce up your profile. There you'll be able to toggle between archived images as well as archived stories.

Only you can see your archive, and you can turn off the feature if you want your Story to disappear as usual.

The feature appears in a new section on your profile below your bio. In your Stories Archive, your stories will appear in a grid with the most recent stories at the bottom.

One of the updates is a feature that will automatically archive users' Stories after they expire. Once that is accomplished, give your Stories Highlights a name and select a cover.

That day-long deadline has been a central part of stories since they launched, with the idea that they would disappear quickly and encourage people not to overthink their posts. You can now make a "highlights" package showing your favorite Stories grouped together, and allow others to see it. To create a new Highlight, users just need to tap the circular "New" icon that's on the top left.

Share to WhatsApp: Allows you to easily share posts or profiles to friends via WhatsApp. Selected Stories will have a blue checkmark on them.

Your highlights will appear below your bio on your profile page.

This will prompt you to take a photo, which will be included in the message along with the photo you received. Many younger users spend hours carefully curating the photos they have on their profile pages. Just choose Edit Highlight or Delete.

These remain on your profile until you choose to remove them.

Adding more photos or videos to your highlight works the same way.
