The president is traveling with current Sen.

Trump has been urging Hatch to run long before Romney entered the conversation, according to the senator's office.

Trump has vowed to try to block Romney, whom he views as a potential thorn in his side in the Senate, according to a White House official and an outside adviser who have discussed the possible bid with the president.

However, Utah Republican House Speaker Greg Hughes maintained Romney "could be a great ally of the president, but, as you well know, they're very different people and have very different personalities".

The president's motives aren't hard to discern: retaining Hatch would allow Trump to keep an ally close while spurning Romney, his onetime presidential primary opponent who remains a vocal critic, and who would in theory prove a much less obliging Congressman.

Hatch has not publicly declared his plans.

But Trump, who has clashed with Romney in the past, said he wants Hatch to run for re-election. "He's not afraid to take on the big boss around here". Their suspicions are warranted: Trump has sounded off to friends about how he doesn't like the idea of a Senator Romney, Politico reports.

Trump demurred on Monday when asked whether he was trying to send Romney a message by encouraging Hatch to run again.

Trump has mostly tried to sway Hatch behind the scenes. Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch.

"You are a true fighter, Orrin, I have to say", Trump said at an event in Salt Lake City, Utah's capital. The president last week also praised Hatch's efforts on passing the Republican tax bill. During their event Monday at the Utah State Capitol, Trump said he hoped the Utahn would stay in the Senate "for a very long time to come".

Romney has called out Trump several times.

"No, not the same". The other opposes racism and bigotry.

Although Romney and Trump appeared to make peace after the 2016 election - with the then-president-elect even reportedly considering appointing the former governor his secretary of state - Romney has criticized the president's "America First" approach to foreign policy and response to violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
