Nibbling on cheese a little bit a day helps keep heart disease at bay, researchers found. Those who ate more cheese had a 10% lower risk of having a stroke and were 14% less likely to developing coronary heart disease.

Researchers from China and the Netherlands analyzed data gathered from 15 previous studies where numerous participants were tracked for at least 10 years.

"This is not the same as eating a big slice of cheesy pizza every day", says Stewart.

While cheese is a source of saturated fat, the researchers state that it "also has potentially beneficial nutrients", such as calcium, which helps limit how much saturated fat the body absorbs. Now, cheese-lovers can sleep well knowing that their midnight snack or post-night-out cheese fry indulgence is actually good for them. Those with the lowest risks of these illnesses were those who consumed around 40 grams a day of cheese - a quantity around the size of a book of matches. The statistics are compared to people who never or rarely ate cheese. With the average American consuming 42.5 grams of food each day, you may find yourself eating less cheese if you want the maximum benefits.

The team's findings build on those of a widely publicized observational analysis that was, which linked cheese and other dairy products to a reduced risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Cheese also has an unsaturated fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid which may affect cholesterol by lowering your bad LDL levels and raising the good HDL levels.

"We're always are searching for ways to minimize heart disease and reduce atherosclerosis", said Allan Stewart, director of aortic surgery at Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
