Pope Francis suggests change to the Lord's Prayer

Francis' assertion that "do not lead us into temptation" is incorrect is not so much a claim that the translation from the Latin Vulgate is literally erroneous, but is a suggestion that the line loses the original spirit or intent of the words. "A father doesn't do that, a father helps you to get up immediately", he continued, blaming Satan instead for any transgressions.

The Lord's Prayer, or the Our Father as it is sometimes called, is recorded in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, which were originally written in a form of Greek that was used as a lingua franca in the Mediterranean region both before and after the life of Jesus.

The pontiff's issue is that the prayer in Italian and English asks God to "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil".

The Pope praised the French Catholic Church, which made a decision to adopt the updated translation at the beginning of this month.

Some say it better translates as "trial" or "testing", and could refer either to the Last Judgment or to trials described elsewhere in Scripture, such as the ones suffered by Job.

"I don't see any need to change because the context of the verse shows it's the devil we don't want to lead us into temptation".

Fr Brendan Hoban, co-founder of the Association of Catholic Priests, said "it never struck me up to this" that the phrase might mean God leading people into temptation. He actually allows us to be tempted.

He also noted how the church in France had adapted the prayer.

He added that many Christians learn the prayer by heart as children, and changing it could cause emotions to run high.
