Shooter among dead in New Mexico high school shooting

A 21-year-old gunman who disguised himself as a student to get into a New Mexico high school where he killed two students had caught the attention of US investigators more than a year ago, authorities said Friday.

Casey J. Marquez and Francisco I. Fernandez were the two victims in the shooting. There were no other injuries.

The FBI said they had previously contact Atchison in March of 2016 after he posted concerning messages on an online gaming forum.

Law enforcement said Friday it was "unlikely" that Atchison knew the victims ahead of time: "Wrong place, wrong time".

The town is about a three-hour drive from Albuquerque. Aztec, New Mexico schools were closed on Friday, December 8.

Deputies and Lt. Kyle Lincoln from the San Juan County Sheriff Department then helped clear the building and actively searched the school.

Atchison was a former student at small-town Aztec High School. He had a backpack with him in which he had his gun and multiple magazines, ammunition storage and feeding devices.

"He had no chance to survive the encounter", Kassetas said about Fernandez. The police chief said Atchison immediately fired his gun, fatally wounding the teen.

Kassetas said Atchison then walked up and down the hallways firing into classrooms.

"She'd love to see everybody here", Marquez's grandfather said. Christesen said Potter did not have the keys to lock the classroom because she is a substitute teacher, so she barricaded her students in the back of the classroom with a couch.

"If things go according to plan, today would be when I die", Atchison's note begins.

I wait until the school buses are detected, then head on foot disguised as a student.

"Go somewhere and gear up, then hold a class hostage and go apes-, then blow my brains out". They said Atchison had planned the shooting and warned people of killing students on social media prior to the shooting. He said he believes that occurred just before Atchison took his own life.

Aztec High School, about 180 miles north of Albuqurque, N.M., is located in the Four Corners region of the state near the Navajo Nation.

A student, Francisco Fernandez, unknowingly walked in on him in the bathroom. "I just want out of this (expletive)". "This is all a awful feeling".

"There were several acts of bravery by staff members, teachers and students that were awesome... that actually saved lives", Governor Martinez said. Police say no one else was injured and that the shooter is dead.

"All New Mexicans are with Aztec today", she said.

"This is a parent's biggest nightmare".
