They produced the second best 10th wicket partnership against the West Indies, behind only the unbroken 78 in the first test by Blundell and Boult.

"New Zealand did a great job but when we batted we didn't produce, especially in the first innings of the first test", stand-in West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said.

He faced two balls from Boult without scoring, before launching the fourth ball he faced in worldwide cricket over the fine leg fence for a maximum, albeit courtesy of a top-edge, joining an exclusive club in the process.

The loss of Shai Hope (28), Roston Chase (12), Sunil Ambris (2) and Brathwaite after the rain break Sunday followed that pattern.

New Zealand reached 373 in the morning session, having begun at 286-7, on the strength of a breezy 10th wicket stand of 61 between new ball pair Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

More news: US Embassy protest turns violent

An emotional Ross Taylor has remembered his mentor the late Martin Crowe after joining Crowe and current Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson at the top of the list of New Zealand test century scorers. It will play only limited-overs matches until its two-test series against England in March.

Spinner Mitchell Santner picked up the final two wickets of Miguel Cummins (nine) and Kemar Roach (32) in two balls in an extended post-lunch session on Tuesday to dismiss the tourists for 203. "Credit to the way we stuck to our plans and executed them well in both games", Williamson told reporters. Television replays, which were not requested by the batting side, hinted that despite Southee's athletic effort the ball might in fact just have touched the ground.

The incident continued an eventful start to Ambris's test career; he has been out hit wicket twice in his first three innings, including to the first ball he faced in test cricket. That created test history as no one else had been out for a hit-wicket golden duck on debut.

Remarkably he was out the same way in the first innings in the second innings at Seddon Park.

A series to forget for West Indies and for Ambris.
