The tweet was received with mixed emotions from some who viewed the streaming site's spying to be a little too Big Brother-y, but most were more concerned with Netflix getting rid of their favorite show.

But the following tweet easily qualifies as the creepiest thing Netflix ever said.

Although the tweet was clearly intended as a joke, it still created some controversy.

"This is incredible. Except for the "watching us like big brother" part", one Twitter user wrote in reply. How else could the company get super-specialized recommendations for you, such as romantic period dramas based on books?

The snarky tweet was trending the next day, garnering some serious laughs and equally hilarious responses, but it also made some subscribers wonder how closely Netflix is watching them.

The tone of the message is also drawing criticism.

The user quickly retorted: 'You're not my mom'.

To be fair, some users raised some pretty legitimate concerns, less upset about the data collection itself and more concerned with who had access to it and the threshold for releasing or even just teasing about that data.

We all know that our Netflix subscription probably knows more about us than even our closest friends. Netflix didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the reaction to the tweet, which has been retweeted about 66,000 times and liked 259,000 times and has drawn 4,000 replies.

Music-streaming service Spotify ran an advertising campaign using users' playlist titles in 2016, mentioning playlists called "I don't know how to make a playlist" and "sorry I lost your cat".

One serious Johnny Depp fan watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl every single day this year, while another Canadian user watched the third Lord of the Rings movie 361 times.
