An Islamic extremist suicide bomber disguised as a police officer killed more than a dozen after infiltrating the Gen. Kahiye Police Academy and detonating explosives strapped around his waist and torso, police said.

At least 10 people have died from a suicide bombing attack on Somalia Police Academy by the Islamic extremist - Al-Shabab in Somalia's capital on Thursday.

The assault is the latest in a decade-old battle by the Jihadists to overthrow Somalia's internationally-backed government.

According to a Reuters report, the bomber was in police uniform and blew himself up inside the training camp.

The bomber walked into the police academy undetected and joined a long line of officers in the rehearsal parade before he detonated the explosives under his sportswear, Hussein said.

Col. Mohamud Aden said that at least 20 other police officers were wounded in the attack, some of them seriously.

"The bomber could have inflicted more casualties if he could have managed to reach the midpoint where most people were", police officer Ibrahim Mohamed said.

Aamin Ambulance Director Abdukadir Abdirahman told Xinhua they had ferried 13 bodies to the city's Medina Hospital. The attack took place at 7:30 a.m.

The U.S. military launched an airstrike against al-Shabaab in Somalia early Tuesday morning, targeting an explosives-filled vehicle, U.S. Africa Command said in a statement. The group regularly carries out bombings in Mogadishu and other towns. "Another 15 were injured and receiving medical treatment", he said.
