Four children killed after train cut through school bus in France crash

Four children aged 12 or 13 died on Thursday in the collision, while 18 others and the bus driver were injured.

She said the people on the train were "totally shocked".

Pictures from the scene showed the school bus sheared in two by the force of the crash. Local authorities said another child had succumbed to injuries on Friday morning.

The bus, which had left the Christian Bourquin College in Millas, was on the crossing when it was hit by the train, which was travelling from Perpignan.

Investigators told the agency that witnesses reported the train crossing?s barriers were working normally, and that it is unclear whether a technical malfunction of human error was responsible for the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Carole Delga, who is president of the Occitan region said that there did not appear to be any mechanical problem.

The bus was reportedly cut in half following the crash.

Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne described the crash as a "terrible accident" and said on Twitter that she was heading immediately to the scene, more than 850 kilometres from Paris.

A statement from his office said he would visit "to support students, families, teachers and the entire educational community".

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: "All my thoughts go to the victims of this awful accident and their families".
