  • NFL takes over Panthers investigation into Jerry Richardson workplace misconduct

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has announced he's selling the team after allegations of misconduct surfaced against him on Friday. The NFL would not confirm whether or not that would change, but it is hard to imagine Richardson continuing to remain in the office while others within the organization are serving as part of the investigation. League source says NFL has retained outside counsel to investigate.

For example: When female Panthers employees showed up to the team office on "Jeans Days", Richardson would ask the women to "turn around so he could admire their backsides" before delivering incredibly crude one-liners, such as "Show me how you wiggle to get those jeans up" and "I bet you had to lay down on your bed to fit into those jeans".

Panthers spokesman Steven Drummond said Sunday the team requested the league take over the investigation.

The investigation against the team's only owner in franchise history is being led by global law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan, LLP, and will be overseen by Bowles, who is a minority owner.

The Panthers issued a statement on Friday saying the team had started an investigation of Richardson. "I have enormous respect for the man, but will wait for the results of the investigation before making any judgment". And we have played in two Super Bowls.

It has been a whirlwind year for the Panthers organization. Team president Danny Morrison resigned earlier this year and has not been replaced, and Jerry Richardson fired Dave Gettleman as the Panthers' general manager just before training camp and replaced him with former GM Marty Hurney.

"We thought it would be best for transparency reasons", Drummond told The Associated Press. The team declined to address specifics when contacted by SI, but Panthers spokesman Steven Drummond said Sunday that the team asked the National Football League to handle the investigation for "transparency reasons". Richardson underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2002 and was placed on a donor waiting list for a new heart.

Richardson has worked primarily behind the scenes during his tenure with the Panthers and rarely does interviews. He received the new heart on February 1, 2009, and has not had any known setbacks since. Richardson is a former wide receiver at Wofford and with the Baltimore Colts who made his money mostly in the restaurant business.

He is one of only two owners to have owned a franchise since its inception. The other owner is Bob McNair of the Houston Texans.
