On the heels of NBC News firing Matt Lauer, an assistant producer on "Hardball with Chris Mathews", complained to company executives that Matthews allegedly made a series of "inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others".

The Daily Caller reported that the payment was in the amount of $40,000.

"In 1999 this matter was thoroughly reviewed and dealt with".

The Daily Caller did not elaborate on the specific nature of Matthews' comments, noting that "the network concluded that the comments were inappropriate and juvenile but were not meant to be taken as propositions". "At that time, Matthews received a formal reprimand". She brought the incident to the attention of CNBC executives after being subject to Matthew's "jokes" in the presence of a group.
