Fans of K-pop superstar Kim Jong-hyun are expressing their grief at the loss of the 27-year-old singer who died Monday in an apparent suicide at a studio apartment in the Gangnam district of Seoul.

Jonghyun was taken to the hospital in Seoul where he was later pronounced dead after being found unconscious in his apartment - reportedly after inhaling toxic fumes from coal burning on a frying pan. "On December 18th, SHINee's Jonghyun left us very suddenly".

Police said they received a telephone call from his sister at 4:42 p.m. Monday, saying she thought he may have attempted suicide.

Jonghyun's agency SM Entertainment has later released an official statement to confirm that the SHINee member has indeed passed away.

Earlier this year, the group went on a world tour that took in the United States and released their fifth album, titled Five. "Tell me I did well", and, "Final farewell", the star said in the messages, according to South Korean media.

Lastly, SM Entertainment requested everyone to avoid making any speculation concerning to Jonghyun, and as his family wishes, his funeral shall be held quietly with his family, close friends and colleagues only. His death is a blow to the massive worldwide fan base that Korea's "K-pop" music has attracted in recent years.

Following his success leading Shinee, the singer-songwriter pursued a solo career in 2015.

Kim Jong-Hyun's tragic suicide note has allegedly been released, citing the high pressure of being a celebrity in Korea.

South Korean pop culture has conquered a large part of Asia over past decade with its K-pop stars topping charts across the region and its TV dramas enjoying huge popularity.
