One vote ends GOP majority in Va. state house

  • Election tie

The even split, if it stands, would be the first time in 18 years that Republicans have lacked a majority in Virginia's lower house.

The Dec. 19 recount, which left Simonds with 11,608 votes compared to incumbent Del. Power sharing is likely to lead to more bipartisan deals.

But an election judge's second thoughts about a questionable ballot threw a wrench in those plans Wednesday. David Yancey and Virginia Republicans conceding defeat, a three-judge panel deliberating the recount Wednesday declared a previously uncounted vote for Yancey valid.

As she waited with her sister and daughter outside the building where the recount was conducted, Simonds said she wasn't going to celebrate until she had confirmation from the city registrar.

Election rules call for double votes to be discarded. They cited concerns raised by a GOP election official who participated in Tuesday's recount.

The state Board of Elections said it hadn't decided on the next move. Emails to the Department of Elections were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Simonds win means the House is evenly split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans.

But there are also other factors at play.

But Simonds's win gives the Democrats an astounding 16 seats picked up in November's election, which should make the GOP very nervous at the national level.

Also, a recount began today in the Richomond-area 68th District.

Shelly Simonds beat three-term incumbent Republican Del. Manoli Loupassi on Election Day Nov. 7. "I believe one locality uses an old-fashioned tri-corner hat for these occasions", Alcorn told the paper.

The person challenging the ballot was Yancey official and he said one ballot had both candidates bubbled in with a slash through Democratic candidate Shelly Simonds' name. David Yancey by 1 vote. The two were battling for the 94th District in Newport News.

The judges are meeting to certify Tuesday's recount.

"Personally, I know of nothing in history like this", he said.

Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker released a jubilant statement about the outcome late this afternoon.

That's quite a comedown for Virginia Democrats. "By running on a platform of expanding health care and providing a great public education to all, Shelly not only won the support of her community - she ended 17 years of Republican control in the general Assembly". That probably would mean a rare power-sharing agreement must be worked out between Democrats and Republicans.
