  • Police say Thomas Cabrera 38 was the driver and tried to murder an officer in the process

Cabrera quickly picked up the pace-the speedometer notching up to 60 mph-and dragged the officer for a while until Cusack lost his grip and fell, rolling to the pavement.

His shoes and uniform were 'shredded from being dragged along the roadway, ' according to a police report obtained by NBC New York.

Cusack hung on as the driver started traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police said that there was a baggie of what appeared to be drugs visible in the vehicle, though it's not visible in the video. The incident was captured on the officer's body-mounted camera.

Officer Cusack will survive, but suffered injuries that require surgery. The officer eventually let go and fall after about half a mile.

Police say Cabrera also tried to pry the officer's fingers off the door with one hand as he steered the auto with the other.

"Our officer reached into the vehicle at this time in an attempt to prevent the suspect from leaving the scene in a possibly impaired state which would endanger our community and the safety of the passenger".

Cabrera led officers in a pursuit onto Interstate 75 and then Interstate 595.

The driver of the auto put his hands out the window as officers approached with guns drawn.

On his way to Century Village's Pembroke Road and 129th Avenue exit, Cabrera allegedly tried to ram into Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue trucks that were responding to the original overdose call.

He admitted using cocaine and heroin before Cusack arrived at his parked vehicle, police say. Cabrera then confessed he and his fiancé did cocaine and heroin before the incident, KBAC reported.

The driver was eventually stopped and arrested charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.

According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, Cusak was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
