  • Report: Apple admits its slowing down older iPhones

The bad news is that Apple has admitted that it intentionally slows down older models of the iPhone.

You could argue that's a sensible policy, but whether you agree with it or not, Apple should have definitely done a better job informing iPhone 6s and 7 owners.

Reddit users have noticed that Apple appears to be slowing down old iPhones that have low capacity batteries. Apple on Wednesday said a software feature released a year ago makes your phone operate more slowly to offset problems with its aging lithium ion battery.

Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple's iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was created to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

In a follow-up post, he added: "The reputation damage from secretly slowing down old iPhones, regardless of the reason, will likely linger for a decade".

The Verge received this statement from Apple: "Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices". Instead of possibly getting to a point where your old iPhone shuts down to "protect its electronic components" due to the advanced age or low temperature of its battery, Apple is looking to prevent such flaws from ever developing... by preemptively putting a cap on your CPU prowess.

Now affected models are iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, with other models potentially receiving the same feature in the future. The processors in those devices wanted to hit faster speeds, but their batteries couldn't handle the demand, prompting some phones to simply switch themselves off. To prevent this, every time a spike occurs, the iPhone would shut down. The Cupertino-based company offers a battery replacement service for $79, and those who have replaced iPhone batteries claim improved benchmark and performance.

Apple says it does so because of the nature of lithium-ion batteries that degrade over time. So even if Apple's reasoning is accurate, the company looks suspicious by not being upfront and transparent about this particular feature.
